... not three of them, but four!!
Sagittarians aren't always loud and active, out aiming their bows and arrows to shoot down hypocrisy and falsehood. Some ofthem are quite timid and introspective, almost owlish, with a decided pacifistic attitude - that is, they are pacifists who sometimes use their fists to put across their points about peace.(Is that a word - pacifistic? It is now.) Yet, even these will speak with blunt candor when their opinions are sought. Timid or pushy, all Sagittarians gaze at the world through the measuring eye of truth. What I'm attempting to make clear is that Sagittarius is a double sign, half-horse, half-man. There are two distinct types of Archers: those who take after the front end or human half of the Centaur - and those who take after the rear end or equestrian half. You may have met both types. I have.
By now, everyone knows that Gemini is also a double sign, symbolized by the Twins, dual in personality, multiple in word and action, myriad in Nature.Do you have any idea of the task involved in sorting out all these identities for the purpose of describing one complex relationship between just two people? The math alone is discouraging.
That Sagittarius friend or neighbor you have, think about him (or her). Heshe may have a gift for zinging out the tactless verbal arrow of truth, yet is he (or she) the kind of Sag who acts like Bashful, of the Seven Dwarfs, at a party? All Jupiter sons and daughters are bright and witty, but the rare shy ones may hide it and can be almost self-effacing in front of strangers. Please note that I said the rare shy ones.
Now, skip to Winston Churchill, of the merry, twinkling Jupiter eye; John Lindsay, former mayor of New York City (an authentic textbook-type Sagittarian); elfish Mark Twain; the quiet (relatively quiet) Arthur Brisbane, formerly of the New York Journal; and, finally, move along to the last friendly puppy dog you saw wagging its tail (all friendly dogs are Sagittarians, by spiritual birthright)and tell me what they all have in common. (Throw in William F. Buckley,if you feel like it.)
All right, I'm an astrologer, I'm supposed to tell you. They have in common honesty, youthfulness, refreshing candor, wisdom and wit - and awkwardness, intermingled with gracefulness. I guess we can take it from there, keeping in mind constantly that although every Archer possesses these qualities, some of them are extroverts deluxe and some are introverts deluxe. Be sure you remember that, please, because I'm not going to interrupt the main body of this chapter to remind you again. I don't want anybody to read this and keep interjecting:"But Marvin is so quiet" - or "Mildred is so shy." It has now been established that some Sagittarians are quiet, timid, and shy. But more of them are talkative and outgoing.
I get the feeling we are back where we started in the first paragraph, but we may have advanced slightly. You always face this astrological problem when dealing with the double signs. Thankfully, there are only three: Gemini, Sagittarius, and Pisces. Well, maybe you could throw in Libra. There are two sides to any set of Scales.
As for Geminis, they have no traits in common whatsoever, except the fact that each one of them is a double-mirror image, has two or more dispositions and personalities, which he or she can change as naturally and as quickly as you or I can change from swim suits to sweaters on a day when the wind can't make up its mind.
Gemini is Air, Sagittarius is Fire, and the back section of this book will tell you how these two elements mix. Quite superbly, most of the time. Disastrously,at others. But generally speaking, they do get on fairly well. Gemini can incite Sagittarius into action - both negative and positive - that the Archer would never have taken without being stirred by the Twins. Air always fansFire into higher flames. Sagittarius can make Gemini feel smothered occasionally, because fire burns out the oxygen in the air, but it can also warm it.
This is a 7-7 Sun Sign Pattern, so naturally, each is slightly envious of the other, because each possesses qualities the other does not have, but would secretly like to cultivate. Gemini needs the Archer's high motivation, ideals, warmth, enthusiasm, and sincerity - and needs also the Sagittarian's ability to travel over more terrain mentally, emotionally, geographically - to shoot for a star, and reach it.
Sagittarius longs for the cool poise and charm of Gemini, the talent for keeping the foot out of the mouth, for remaining cool and detached in the face of most disturbing situations, and especially needs the Gemini verbal adroitness, called tact.
When they get together, they have two choices. Each can admire the opposite traits of the other, and try to imitate them, in order to grow and mature spiritually. Or - each can fear and envy the opposite qualities of the other, and try to put them down, robbing each other of all pride in doing his (or her) own thing.
Both Gemini and Sag (pronounced to rhyme with badge) tend to be scintillating, rather than solid - dashing and daring, rather than dependable and enduring. Both have minds capable of high intelligence, but not necessarily designed for achievements of lasting design and construction (unless other planetary configurations in their birth charts give this quality - which, of
course, in a number of cases, they do).
The ideas of both are more like shooting stars or comets than steady Suns. What can be accomplished in a few days by Gemini and Sagittarius will often be brilliant, but a project involving longer periods of time and effort may not come off so well, unless there are the just-mentioned supportive planet positions of strength and patience in the nativities. For knocking around together, instant empathy and general compatibility, the glittering Mercury-ruled and the benevolent Jupiter-ruled get along exceedingly well most of the time. But there's always the chance that sly Mercury (Gemini) may be unable to resist tricking sincere Jupiter (Sag) in some way, and the resentment of this may be violent (the read1xeArcher being of the Fire Element).
Sagittarians, while excessively emotional at times, are for the most part without guile. The clever, glib Gemini who plays mental chess games with the trusting Archer may later regret the harm done to another human being, however unintentional. According to ancient legends, the gods feel a special affection for these Sagittarian children of the zodiac, watchfully protecting them from those who would harm them. This is the basis for the so-called Jupiter"luck." A word to the wise is said to suffice, but not all Geminis are always wise, just clever - sometimes too clever and the Mercury Bird may, when least expected, trip in his (or her) own trap.
Gemini's quick wit, swift intellect and ease with words can seduce occasional Mercury Birds into becoming con artists supreme, tricky car salesmen and politicians, swindlers, drug pushers, or just plain, old-fashioned crooks. Yet, these very same qualities allow many Twins to become excellent teachers, literary geniuses, creative artists and musicians, clever mathematicians, brilliant scientists, and sincere and convincing salesmen of all manner of things. The Gemini duality calls these men and women in both directions. They're pulled on by both their Twin Selves, between day and night, dark and light, wrong and right - a spiritual struggle that continues, in a mild way, even with the prosaic,"ordinary" Geminians.
Most Geminis are far too intelligent and too fond of their freedom to risk apprehension and confinement by breaking the law, but those who do flirt with antisocial activities lean toward the light-fingered crimes, such as twirling combination locks on safes, forgery and counterfeiting. Seldom will a Gemini be guilty of homicide, although the Twins may be an "accomplice to murder." The Gemini criminal prefers to mastermind the crime and delegate the authority for the action to others, the tendency of all Mutable Sign people. There are always a few scattered and very rare notable exceptions that prove this, or any other rule, but only the smallest fraction of those confused souls who commit murder are Geminis. Killing requires more raw physical aggression than most Mercury-ruled people are able to muster. Violence offends the sensitivity of the average or typical Geminian.
All Geminis, of any age or sex, possess active, fertile minds, always operating at high speed, and never mind the quietness and placidity you notice in the surface personality of the one Twin who appears to be dominant in the Mercury personality. As quiet and placid as he or she may be, the brain is constantly busy, busy, busy. Don't judge a Gemini by his (or her) speech patterns alone.Carefully note the results. Somehow, things get done, and they get done fast, when Gemini chooses, however slow-appearing the outward activity may be.The pose of slowness is totally deceptive. The bottom line is what counts.
In fact, many Geminians deliberately choose just such a disguise to fool people. They allow the "quiet" Twin to be the"front" for the Mercury personality, and keep the swift, super-smart, restless Twin in the background at all times, directing the strategy, all unsuspected by the bastrologically unenlightened.Notice the eyes of the deceptively quiet ones. You'll see a continual"twinkle," a quick darting look, taking in the scope of any situation in a glance. The eyes tell the story.
The essential and basic nature of Mercury-ruled people is very much like that of the Jupiter-ruled people - sunny, cheerful and optimistic (though Gemini is never as naive as Sag, even in youth). Later in life, both become cynical in varying degrees, yet somehow, still retain a certain childlike hope. Yes, I know that's contradictory, but the character of all double signs is contradictory.D-o-u-b-l-e. D-u-a-1. Two things at the same time. Simultaneous non sequiturs.
As for the poor Archers, they are not always quite so persuasive as Gemini, and frequently find themselves in hot water when they blurt out uncomfortable truths. Not that Sagittarians aren't charming. They possess oodles of rainfresh,dew-drenched charm, but it quickly loses its power when they begin to fling a string of stinging words with very little subtlety or tact. Blunt is the word for Sagittarius, and bluntness doesn't win ball games. At least, not as many ball games as may be won by the verbally graceful and mentally adept Gemini, who often wins on sheer glibness alone. Gemini can be cutting in speech also, but only when he or she chooses to use the weapon of sarcasm.
Sagittarius is usually incapable of sarcasm. The Archer's sharp speech hurts only because of the ring of reality most people don't want to hear. Sarcasm requires a certain kind of twisting of the truth to make the truth clearer than Sag is normally capable of either handling or comprehending (unless, of course, the Archer's Moon or Ascendent is in Gemini).
It should be pointed out that those rare, quiet Sagittarians and Geminis who are keyed to a lower pitch (outwardly) than the large majority of Archers and Twins are seldom silent when they're together. Gemini has a way, by sheer auric vibration, of fanning the mildest Sag into a flaming spell of an unaccustomed monologue of words - sometimes happy and enthusiastic, at other times angry. In a similar manner, the Archer can stimulate a desire in the meeker (on the surface) Geminis to be more loquacious. But after these two have incited one another into conversation, they may not really listen to each other. They may appear to be listening, but actually, one is only waiting for the other to finish talking, so he (or she) can put across a contradictory opinion. A dramatic disagreement between them can get pretty noisy, with the need for a third party to referee. Or - one of the two will completely subdue the other, in which case, the subdued one will seek freedom from such restriction at the very earliest opportunity. In other words, leave. Sometimes, permanently.
Sagittarius tends more to inflict emotional blows to Gemini (although the Twins will make an attempt to hide such wounds behind a mask of cool boredom and disinterest) and Gemini is more likely to succeed in bending the Sagittarian mind into strange shapes, sometimes causing mental depression in the Jupiter person.
When these two (or four) are in harmony, however, through a positive Sun-Moon interchange between their birth charts, they can be fun to be around. One is always trying to top the other, and they'll also help each other over the rough spots, finding ways to express themselves, and to communicate, which is like a private language between them.
Often, Sag and Gemini will speak to each other's minds and hearts through music, poetry or art - or even body language (which is a very valid form of communication, and can be most eloquent). They reach out toward one another over waves of invisible enthusiasm and excitement... dreaming impossiblen dreams together... looking for four-leaf clovers . . . and finding them surprisingly often (thanks to Jupiter luck, and Mercury visual alertness) . . . reflecting, in their eyes, a soul comprehension of the mutual need and desire to imitate which all polarities influenced by the 7-7 Sun Sign Pattern recognize, somehow sensing that they are opposites, seeking to blend into completeness through communion with each other.
